What does it mean to be kind?
It starts with being present with another offering your attention. My personal work means taking care of myself so that I can be there with others.

Kindness begins with a sense of being lovable and for me that means having a sense of love from a higher power, you are not alone. Once that happens you build trust that life can be a positive experience that gives you strength to hear what is painful because you have a bigger context of a positive life view.

Is it easy to be kind?
Yes. Sometimes, but not always.

What do you do when people are being challenging or difficult?
Sometimes I walk away, depending on who or what the issue is. I try to remember that it’s not about me and I try to listen for the pain that’s making them hard to be with.

If it’s a really important relationship, I listen. I stand up for my needs and try to be open to what they need from me. If it’s not important I probably engage as little as possible and let them have it for themselves. I try to be detached from outcome.

What’s the kindest thing that’s happened to you lately?
I recently put on a talent show at a school. The event was beautiful. I had to work on my ability to open up and talk about needing help. Once I did people were so generous and everyone supported the event.
